| Proceeds of a loan Did you know that money received from a bona fide loan is not income to SSI recipients? If the person keeps the proceeds from the loan into the month after the loan was granted, however, the loan does become a resource. Recently, this question came up in Region IX. The SSI recipient took out a home-equity loan to pay for home modifications. When possible, the individual in situations like this should incur the cost, get the loan and pay the expenses immediately in order not to negatively affect SSI eligibility.
