Disability
at Full Retirement Age
People
who are receiving SSDI are automatically switched to Retirement
at Full Retirement Age (FRA). Full retirement age (FRA) is the age
at which unreduced retirement (old-age), spouse's, or widow(er)'s
benefits may be paid.
-
There
is no impact on benefit amount.
-
Once
people reach FRA, there is no limit to what they may earn and
receive all benefits.
-
Often
people don’t know the benefits received are Retirement
Insurance Benefits, instead of SSDI.
This
happens because the SSA actually considers the person’s SSDI
benefit to be their full retirement taken early due to a disability.
Once people reach Full Retirement Age, the SSA may pay them their
full retirement benefit without worrying whether they have a disability.
Remember that Full Retirement Age used to be age 65, but is increasing
gradually to age 67.
